Can we get rid of NAMTA?

February 1st, 2008 · No Comments

Right now the US and Canadian Dollars are at parity to 3 decimal places. Can we get rid of the North American Managed Trade Agreement and bring in something resembling economic union? Surely all the vested interests protected by that pact are dead by now.

As a European citizen, as well as a NAMTA citizen, I’m truly impressed by how easy it is for me to move to and work in any EU country (I’m not talking about taxes and things that happen after I’m employed):

  1. Find a job.
  2. Show up for work.

As opposed to the NAMTA approach (just looking at a Canadian working in the US):

  1. Find a job
  2. Figure out which visa would work best. If it’s an H1B, stop now, as they’re impossible to get. If it’s a TN visa (notice that they took two letters from the NAFTA agreement to come up with this, but definitely not the F), then remember that you have to maintain a residence in Canada or face deportation.
  3. Show up for work.
  4. For TN visas, every year, repeat step 2.

At the very least, maybe they could adopt my suggestion for renaming NAFTA. Nothing free about it. I especially like the similarity of my proposed name to NAMBLA, since they were probably one of the vested interests protected somewhere in the voluminous documents associated with the agreement.
