I had a minor traffic spike yesterday, unusual since I haven’t posted much lately. I assume it’s because some people out there wanted to see if I had an opinion on the latest digg rumor and the latest Jay Adelson denial of that rumor. On the denial, shouldn’t MS or Google people be denying it? The article is about them and some other unnamed companies preparing bids - there isn’t anything about digg actually doing anything, so it’s easy to say for Jay to say it’s innaccurate. Since the article doesn’t say anything he is responsible for, he’s just expressing an opinion.
On the rumor - I’m feeling a bit sorry for Michael Arrington this morning, as probably the main result of this is that his credibility takes a hit. Other that, it’s just another rumor, perhaps a trial balloon, who knows… I’ve been hearing these things since May 2005.
Usual disclaimer.

Hi Owen -
I’m confused by this post - are you saying the Google and/or MS negotiations with Digg are not happening? Wouldn’t you have to be in the loop on this as an equity holder?

Um, no. To the second question.

OK, cool…

Probably yes since this is a big deal that could affect stock pricing. The fact they are not suggests at least a bit of smoke here. My new hypothesis is that there are a large number of nuanced discussions going on between big players and there is *always* a price at which DIGG or others will sell.
Thus these rumors are not really true or false - though they are often … misleading.
Funny though - at CES I asked your Yahoo counterpart David Filo if Yahoo had met with MS about a sale at CES. He said he had not, but would not be at such a meeting. David then headed off to dinner with Jerry Yang and I think Terry Semel who was there but not introduced.
So, are you and Kevin having dinner this week?
By the way great blog here Owen. It’s always nice to get insight from some of the key online architects. Adding you to the blogroll today!
